Maey danav defeated

 Maey danav defeated

Maey was a powerful son of a wife named Danu of sage Kashyap. Sons of Danu and sage Kashyap are known as danavas. He was a chaste and dedicated devotee of lord Shiv. The place where he lived was known as Maeyarashtra which with the passage of time became Meerut of modern days. He had two staunch friends named Tarak and Vidyunmali. All th e three pleased lord Brahma who asked them,-“Sons seek any boon. I am pleased with you all.” The trio supplicated with folded hands,-“Father! Sons of Aditi(i.e. devtas) have been creating lot of tension for us ever since the beginning. They do not let us live peacefully any where. Please create such an isolated place where they could not enter at all.” Lord Brahma cogitated for a while and then said,-“Fine You shall live in a place inapproachable for devtas and that will be know as Tripur where only all of you three shall rule.” “Father please make us immortal” came the second wish from the danavas. Braham broke into laughter,-“You can build Tripur but you can not become unslayable at all.”  “ Father! then please bless us that a person capable of burning Tripur with just one arrow should end our life.” “Be it so” said Lord Brahma. Blessing them so, Lord Brahma returned to his abode in Brahmalok.

Filled with energy and pride, the three danavas  got busy with their new township. In no time did they found themselves ruling in a town filled with the best of everything. There was no material comfort available in three spheres that was not available in Tripur. Their joy knew no bounds. Daily they used to worship lord Shiv with their kith and kin and lived in perfect joy and happiness. Thus passed a long time.

One night Maey had a dream in which he saw four ferocious women and three repulsive men entering Tripur. Next morning he shared his anxiety that grew from the night watch with his family members. “Let us all worship lord Shiv to cast off this evil energy” he said to all friends and relatives. However filled with pride no one bothered to elicit the message hidden in the dream of their king. They all had become arrogant and began to pull each others leg out of vanity. This disrupted the peace and Tripur turned into a cauldron of mutual bickering and mudslinging. The cruelty ruling the minds and hearts of denizens of Tripur vitiated the atmosphere to such an extent that devtas began to feel uncomfortable with their vibrations. Perplexed devtas prayed to lord Brahma to help them out by controlling the danavas cruelty. Helpless Brahma took them all to lord Shiv who was the patron of danavas.lord Shiv thought for a while and then said,-“Do not worry devtas. I shall burn this Tripur. Please prepare a chariot for me.” All devtas gathered with jubilation and applied all their powers to build a magnificent chariot for lord Shiv. Seeing the matchless chariot endowed with energies of all devtas the ganas of lord Shiv exclaimed,-“Wonderful! Matchless! May the victory be with devtas! Kudos to our lord Shiv!” Meanwhile aware of all ethos of cosmic drama celestial devotee of lord Vishnu Narad descended in Tripur. Maey welcomed the divine sage in his kingdom. Appearance of sage Narada dispelled the gloom of danav.” Sage Narada! You are all knowing. Now a days in my kingdom several strange calamities keep occurring now and then. We all are so scared of anything going to ruin us all any moment. Kindly tell me what is the possible reason of this all.” He asked with folded hands. Narada was calm and serene. Disclosing an unpleasant event is the toughest of challenge for any clairvoyant. “Maey! You patronize danavas who are natural enemies of devtas. The calamities erupting now and then augur only end of Tripur. Lord Shiv is on his way to reach here..” saying so Narad took leave and flew away. The anxious Maey was in deep sorrow. Lord Shiv has been his deity whom he worshipped daily. Hearing that lord Shiv was going to arrive to end his kingdom did not arouse fear in him. He was all set to enjoy the drama of having confrontation with his lord. He therefore, asked his kinsmen to make preparations for a war with lord Shiv. Devtas accompanying lord Shiv began their march from mount Kailash. At Illavart which is known as Allahabad in modern times sage Narad also joined the army of lord Shiv.It is believed that mother Aditi the first wife of sage Kashyap begot devtas at Illavart only. Lord Shiv organized his army and exhorted Indra to march ahead of him. “ Indra you shall be at the front. I shall follow you. I shall find entrance to Tripur and burn it with just one arrow.”

Surrounded by divine weapons and divine vehicles residents of Tripur tried their level best to protect themselves. However in a fierce battle devtas surrounded them all from all sides. Nandi applied his vajra and finished Vidyunmali. Seeing his friend dead Tarakaksha rushed forward to fight. His fiery weapons began to kill devtas. He then created heavy rains and dust storm to confuse the enemies. Maey created an illusory water pond filled with lotus and swans. He dipped the corpse of Vidyunmali in to the water and revived him in a moment. Maey succeeded in resurrecting all the dead warriors of danav army. Tarakaksha was so might that he wounded lord Brahma also. Now it was the turn of lord Vishnu. Aroused by the tough battle offered by followers of lord Shiv he lifted his sudarshan chakra and entered Tripur with matchless speed that frittered away all danavas in no time. Lord Vishnu took up the form of a bull and drank all the water of the pond created by Maey that used to resurrect danavas. The bull now began to roar like a ferocious tiger having emptied the pond of reviving energy possessed by Maey. The stalwarts of army of lord Shiv known as Pramathganas battered the army of danavas to such an extent that the three friends began to realize that their end was indeed imminent. They were filled with fatigue and fear. Lord Shiv saw the three danavas reeling in terror. He then turned to Lord Brahma and said,-“Lord Brahma! Routed by us the danavas have runaway for their lives. They are now hiding in the ocean. Please lead my chariot to them.” Commanded by their commander Lord Shiva the army marched to Western Ocean. When danavas heard the sound of roaring devtas they forgot to remain quiet and began to react ferociously by thundering in loud voices. Ferocious battle ensued in the ocean. Finally Nandi got the credit of killing two stalwarts of Maey named Tarakaksha and Vidyunmali. The Chief Commander of devtas was all set to prove his might. Lord Shiv shining in his celestial chariot took out his single arrow that was destined to end the calamitous Tripur. For a moment he closed his eyes praying to celestial powers of trinity to bless him and invested the arrow with the synergy of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv and unleashed it at Tripur. Having unleashed the arrow to end magnanimous Tripur, compassionate lord Shiv began to lament and reel in anguish for having ended the abode of his devotees.” Fie upon me! Fie upon me! He exclaimed. Such a painful thing has happened”. Screamed his heart, lamenting at the end of his devotees. Nandi was aghast. How could his master behave with such contradiction, he failed to understand. He threw an objectionable glance at his lord.” Lord! What is the matter?” he asked in awe. “Nandi my devotee Maey will be destroyed today.” Words expressed the anguish of heart of lord Shiv wallowing in ineffable sorrow. Moved by the affection of his lord to his devotee Nandi wasted no time and rushed to sympathize with the fortunate devotee of his master. “Maey your Tripur is going to turn into ashes as lord Shiv has unleashed his arrow. Please move away from here to some safe place.” Nandi appeared before the danav and disclosed. Maya was filled with devotion to his lord. He wasted no time and rushed out of Tripur with his family. As he stood out of the Tripur, he saw his kingdom Tripur turning into ashes. What amazed him was the compassion of his lord who had spared his palace intact even after destroying the kingdom. He closed his eyes in deep and unflinching devotion to his lord Shiv who had devoured the cause of tension to him and at the same time protected him all the way to let him rejoice with his family in a new and safe abode.
