BESTOWER OF BOONS

Maddened  Daitya Vrika

Shiva meditated for sixty thousand yugas and became as powerful as Lord Krishna. His aura became matchless and he began to harbour the dream of having become the greatest of all.

A daitya Vrika performed severe penance day and night for one whole year at Kedar Nath.  Moved by his rigorous penance Shiva appeared before him to bestow a boon. However, Vrika did not open his eyes at all.  Bound by immense love to him, Lord Shiv began to remain with Vrika all the time awaiting him to seek some boon.  He wished to give Vrika all prosperity, celestial power and liberation but he asked for none.  Vrika kept on meditating only on feet of Lord Shiva.

Seeing him so indifferent to boons, Shiva felt scared and began to cry.  This interrupted the meditating Vrika.  He opened his eyes and found Shiva sobbing in front of him.  Vrika got ................ to see Shiva and said – “May anyone I place my hand on head may turn into ashes”.

Shiva felt relieved and blessed him. Vrika being a demon began to follow Shiva to turn him into ashes.

Shiva ran for his life.  His dumb bell and tiger skin fall down.  Naked and terrified he ran here and there not giving a slightest idea that he too could kill the Vrika before Vrika could place his hand on his head.  Shiva cannot even dream of harassing anyone.  Realizing his own and nearby Shiva gave up his pride and cried to seek help of Sri Krishna.  As He rushed to Goloka and cried – “O Hari save me please!”  His throat and lip was parched out of her nervousness.

SK stilled the daitya and asked what the matter was.  Vrika could not hide any thing from Sk and narrated the whole episode.

SK applied his illusionary power and the daitya placed his hand upon his own head and turned into ashes.

All Gods and Shiva eulogised SK when Shiva lost his pride.  SK said “O, Shiva, it is I who give power to bestower of boons to fructify the boon!”  Shiva realized his error and saluted SK.
