Dejected by Lord Vishnu
After Lord Shiv attained Parvati in marriage, they went to the bank of river Narmada and began to live together. Amidst flowers and scenic beauty, they rejoiced in each other’s company. For thousand divine years they remained immersed in love. The touch of Goddess Parvati’s tender form drove Lord Shiv into delirium. He swooned out of love. Goddess Parvati also swooned being deeply steeped in love. Both were so lost that they even became oblivious of day and night. Their dwelling was rich in natural beauty and prosperity. All pretty birds sang and danced in joy to celebrate their conjugal sport. Finding them so much lost in love, all deities became anxious. They could not know how to bring them back to normalcy.
They all gathered and approached Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma took them all
to Vaikunthalok to counsel with Lord Vishnu. Lord Brhama disclosed the cause of
anxiety of all deities and quietly awaited the decree of Lord Vishnu. All were awestruck and silent. Lord Brahma
said,-“Lord! Thousand divine years have passed bye yet they are still lost in
conjugal sport. They both are great yogis yet are not stopping even for a while
from loving each other. O Lord! Please tell me, what kind of child shall be
born to them?”
Lord Vishnu smiled and said,-“O Brahma! The lawmaker! Worry not. Everything will be alright. How can those who take shelter into me, ever suffer? Please take along all these deities and see to it that the seed of Lord Shiv should fall on the Earth. For if his seed enters the womb of Goddess Parvati, the son born of their union will be so powerful that he will endanger the existence of all devta not to talk of danava.’ Hearing the words of wisdom and guidance from Lord Vishnu, all deities came back to the Earth. They all gathered at the bank of river Narmada and began to chalk a strategy to attain their goal. They were anxious as well as nervous for the fear of receiving a curse from Mother Parvati. Indra asked Kubera,Kubera asked Varuna,Varuna asked Pawan, Pawan asked Yama, Yama asked Agni, Agni asked Surya, Surya asked Chandrama and Chandrama asked Ishan to interrupt their sport..
Indra turned his face aside and went at the entrance of the cave where the couple was indulging in conjugal bliss. He softly said,-‘ Lord Mahadev! I bow before you. O the Greatest of yogis! O Lord of universe! Protector of devotees! How come you are indulging in such an act..?” saying so he ran away. Surya then turned aside his eyes and mumbled,-“O Mahadeva! Preserver of the World! Husband of Goddess Parvati! Salutations to you! What are you doing..?” uttering so in a low voice and scared of them, he ran away. Chandrama came with bowed back and said,-“ O Trilochana! Lord of three spheres! O self willed! What are you doing..?”
Pawan said,-“O Lord! I salute you. You are the seed of righteousness, prosperity, desires and liberation. What are you doing..?” hearing such incessant pleadings of deities, Lord Shiv wanted to rise up from his bed but for the fear of desirous Goddess Parvati, he could not dare get up. He felt that all deities were repeatedly exhorting him to rise up. He thought for a while and finally got up. As soon as he stood up and reached the entrance of the cave, his semen fell down on the Earth. He realized the delicacy of the moment and promptly told all deities, - “Run away ….all of you!” Lord Agni swiftly rushed up, in an eyeblink he took away semen of Lord Shiv and delivered it to Krattikas to develope a six headed son named Kartikeya out of it. Aware of possible wrath of Goddess Parvati, all deities ran off. Even Lord Shiv was trembling in fear of Goddess Parvati. Annoyed and disappointed Goddess Parvati rose up and came out of the cave but did not find any of the deities there. Dejected and enraged she cursed devtas,-“All of these deities will remain barren henceforth!” Husband Lord Shiv looked at wife Goddess Parvati who was shedding tears of frustration with her head hung low. He held her hand and embraced her. He said,- O, the best daughter of Himvant! You are blessed and have stolen my heart. You are my fortune and Goddess who rule over my life. O Mother of World! Tell me what do you wish for? I will surely do your bidding. What is impossible for us when both of us are together? Forgive your this innocent husband. I am Shiv only in your association. Without you I am a mere shav(corpse). You are abode of wisdom, peace and prosperity. Please, bless me with your smile and utter your honeyed speech. I am indeed dying to see you fuming so.Please revive me, my better half!”
Goddess Parvati composed herself somehow. She said,-“What can I say? You are omniscient. Desirous woman divulges secret of her heart to a husband who is poor in grasp. O Mahesh! Women find it impossible to say, still I say,-“For a woman, mating with her beloved husband in solitude is the most blissful. Interruption in sport is equally painful to her. I suffer as our sport was interrupted.. secondly I failed to usher in your seed; thirdly I am yet without a son. Although I got you as my husband yet am still childless. O Lord of Yogis! Tell me please, how can I fulfil my wish?” Saying so, she dropped her head. Relieved Lord Shiv laughed. He said,-“O Goddess! Please Lord Srikrishna. He alone can fulfil your wish.”
