Nandi
the carrier
Shiv attained immense power and began to
believe that he is the destroyer of three spheres namely bhuloka, bhuvarloka
and swargaloka. One daitya Triparusara also performed immense penance and
became invincible for all. He began to create havoc in three spheres being
inebriated with pride. When Shiv had to fight
the demon he inwardly thought, -“I am the destroyer of three spheres. What can
this moth do in front of me?” He did not take his trident and the Kavacha given
by Lord Shrikrishna and called upon the daitya to fight. A ferocious
warfare took place for one whole year
day and night. Neither could succeed in claiming ultimate victory. Neither was
willing to give up. Tired of fighting on earth daitya rose up in the sky and
attacked Shiv with his illusory power. The battle in sky went on for an entire
month. Tripurasura cut down weapons of his enemy sportily and even destroyed
his chariot. Angered Shiv boxed him and he fainted. As soon as daitya regained
consciousness, he clasped Shiva and threw him down. Seeing Shiv falling down
along with his broken chariot all terrified deities prayed to Lord Shirkrishna
to save him from such dishonour. “O Lord, Save me please!” cried Shiva with
eyes closed in remembrance of Shrikrishna.
Moved by his plight, he praised Krishna in numerous
ways. Krishna enjoyed by being remembered in such a heartrending way. He took
to the form of a bull and seated Scared Shiv on his back. Shiv was relieved.
His lord had rescued him from the dishonour ultimately. Krishna embraced Shiv
in his subtle form and gave him his trident and kavach as well so that
he could vanquish his enemy. With renewed strength Shiv hurled his trident on
daitya and he fell down for good. Shiv gave up the pride forever as Krishna
began to enjoy bearing his beloved Shiv on his back being his vehicle named
Nandi Bull.
