V DISCIPLE
Mohini makes him dance
The event of
sagar-manthan had taken place. Lord Shiv
in those days lived with goddess Sati at mount Kailash. He came to know that
lord Vishnu immortalized devtas by
giving them ambrosia that issued from the churning of ocean and thus
rendered daityas powerless. Intrigued by the trick played by Lord Vishnu to
make devtas immortal, he appeared before lord Vishnu with goddess Sati. They
exchanged pleasantries. “Lord Shiv! What brings you here?” Asked lord Vishnu.
“Lord Vishnu! I am keen to see that form of yours that hoodwinked the daityas
and immortalized devtas. I wonder how you did this miracle!” expressed innocent
Shiv. Lord Vishnu being a master wizard began to smile and replied,-“Lord Shiv!
You are a yogi. Better not wish to see my that form as it floors all men
howsoever great they may boast to be.” Hinting him to not ask for something
that could sway him. “Lord! I am here only with that wish. Please, just for a
moment, let me see that form of yours. I long to see, how it worked.” Insisted
lord Shiv. “If you are so keen, then fine. I shall show you that..” said lord
Vishnu.
Lord Shiv stood there with wife Sati beside
him. All of a sudden he found the scenario undergoing a transformation.
Fragrant breeze began to blow. Flowers appeared all around and birds, bees and
moths began to sing and dance to attract their counterparts. Peacocks danced and
cooed to invite peahens; bees hummed over pollens; geese cackled and fluttered
their wings. All around there was intoxication. All indulged in romantic
dalliance. What Lord Shiv saw next was
a young girl playing around with a ball in the midst of flowers. Her
youth and beauty mesmerized lord Shiv. Aplomb of ethereal beauty, luscious
youth and quintessence of innocence she appeared gliding over flowers with her
long, lucent hair flowing down her sleek shoulders. Her muslin clothes
dishevelled, her dark eyes sparked with radiance and delight. She appeared as
bright as the pole star in a new moon sky; as pure as a lily; as swift as a
scurrying deer and as cheerful as a lark. As a person deprived of water and
wondering in a desert feels drawn to a spring of fresh water so did lord Shiv
feel on seeing the enticing girl. Suddenly a strong waft of wind took away her
clothes and Shiv caught a glimpse of her bosom and thighs. The single vision of
her enmeshing feminine charm maddened him. He forgot everything and began to
follow the girl. His mind got filled with a single desire of caressing the
girl. With his mighty arms clanging to clasp her to his heart his feet flew
after the magnetic stealer of his heart. The girl also seemed to knew the
intent of yogi stalking her. Now and then she would turn around to throw an
enticing glance at him with a smile and helpless stalker followed her
everywhere being oblivious of time, space, body and status. The charmer played
the game of hide and seek with the innocent chaser, pulling him to swirl around
the entire earth. The path of enchantment does not end till one is awaken by
wisdom and reasoning. So did it happen with lord Shiv. His spiritual wisdom did
not come to rescue him from the ocean of searing suffering born of a desire to
touch the girl. He only longed to embrace the girl. Thus the Mohini made him
dance to her tune and he kept on chasing her for long. Neither could he get her
nor could he contain his own advances to her. Helpless, the yogi became so
agitated and excited that his semen tickled down his loins at various
spots all over earth. As he went on
longing for her alone without feeling satiation, he suddenly realized that a
long period had elapsed and he found
neither the girl nor anything else and rather had lost his creative
energy massively. Realizing so he began to pray to lord Vishnu,-“Lord Vishnu!
Where are you! Why am I following this girl and for what? How long shall I go
on chasing this mirage? Please rescue me and guide me lord!..” As he screamed
from the bottom of his heart the scene changed all together. There was neither
the garden nor the girl. Only Lord Vishnu stood in front of him smiling and
teasing him with a silent look. Lord Shiv heaved a sigh of relief. Was it a
dream? He wondered. Where had he been and god forbid, what was he up to and for
what? Multitude of questions thronged his mind which he could not ask. He
simply hung his head in shame and saluted lord Vishnu.
With the passage
of time the spots where semen of lord Shiv fell turned into mines of gold and
precious gems. The gold is therefore considered auspicious and holy.
Back home while seated in his cave at mount
Kailash, and recalling his experience with Mohini, lord Shiv confided in his
wife Sati,-“I wonder how powerful the illusory power of lord Vishnu is! A continent
such as me who was steeped in supreme self for eons got so enmeshed in it
that I do not know for how long I kept on chasing the Mohini to catch a glimpse
of her beauty. How can I then blame an ordinary man who fritters away his life
after life and keeps on passing through cycles of death and rebirth chasing the
attractions of mundane world? I wonder what happened to my spiritual wisdom!
Sati! Truly I believe for sure that only those human beings are fortunate who
take shelter in the lotus feet of lord Vishnu as his grace alone can liberate a
human being from the illusory attractions of profanity. There is no other path
to attain liberation and peace other then chanting names of lord Hari.”
