VII.          A YOGI

   the supreme light of Ardhanarishwar

Lord Brahma emerged from the lotus stemming from the navel of Mahavishnu. He began to ponder about himself. As he wondered and asked to himself,-‘Who am I and who is my creator?’ he heard a voice saying,-‘Tapa’. Brahma therefore, began to meditate and after thousands of years of meditation knew that he was Brahma and entrusted by the supreme lord the task to expand creation. Lord Vishnu also appeared before Lord Brahma and both of them wished to know further about their own emergence and origin. They explored the ultimate source of creation together. Finding no answer through discussion they prayed to the invisible source to enlighten them. A brilliant light appeared between them that baffled them all the way. They followed the light that was vertically present between them. They followed it downward and then upward but found no end to it. Finding neither its origin nor its end they stopped and prayed to the unknowable divine light to enlighten them,-“Supreme Lord! We are not capable of knowing you. We merely salute you in reverence. Please appear in such form that may be knowable to us.” They repeatedly prayed. In spite of such prayers they heard only a sound echoing around the light,-‘ohm….ohm’ . The right side of the light showed alphabet ‘a’ and was as golden as sunlight; the left side of the light showed alphabet ‘u’ and looked as bright as fire and the middle of light showed alphabet ‘m’ with the colour of light as silver. As the two lords kept on  praying to be enlightened by the supreme light in a manifest form, there appeared lord Shiv with goddess Parvati as his consort. They blessed the two lords and quenched their thirst of knowledge. The two lords received supreme wisdom and blessings from lord Ardhnarishwar. Having blessed and enlightened them the light disappeared. Lord Shiv is manifestation of supreme spiritual wisdom and dispassion and mother Parvati is manifestation of intelligence and power. One who is blessed by them attains wisdom and power both.

Long back a bunch of auster brothers known as Baalkhilya took the vow of attaining liberation and performed great penance by chanting name of lord Shiv while hanging from a tree. Lord Shiv and mother Parvati were passing over the spot. When mother Parvati found them hanging so with name of lord on their lips she said to lord Shiv,-‘ Lord1 They are so youthful yet having renounced the worldly pleasures they have been performing such rigorous penance to please you. Why don’t you give them a matching reward?’ Lord Shiv began to smile. “Don’t you believe me?” asked mother.” No. Goddess. They are only physically involved in penance not mentally.” He explained. The duo began to discuss the eligibility and purity of the brothers. Lord Shiv then said,’”If you do not believe me then see how I test them  now and you will know the truth yourself..”

Saying so he appeared as a naked youth endowed with mesmerizing power. Seeing the charm of naked youth the young wives of sages felt attracted to him. They offered the naked youth everything. The naked youth then began to walk away. Hypnotized by the power of naked youth the women also followed him and chased him for a while. The sages noticed the charm of a naked youth that had enmeshed their youthful wives. They could not bear the gesture of their wives and ran after the youth who had spontaneously stolen away their wives. They rushed after the naked youth with their sticks and began to beat him up. As they resorted to beat the stranger the naked youth vanished.

Seeing the gesture of sages, mother Parvati began to smile. Lord Shiv had proved that while chanting the name of lord the mind of young sages was hovering around the gestures of their wives alone.
