Narad sings the song divine!
Sage Narad performed
hard penance to have a glimpse of lord Shiv at Rudraprayaga. Pleased by his
unflinching faith and devotion lord Shiv along with mother Parvati appeared.
Overwhelmed Narad composed thousands of name in praise of divine parents and
worshipped them with utmost sincerity. Narad said,-“Lord! I am indeed blessed
to see you both. You are the ultimate wisdom incarnate in science of sound and
music. Please enlighten me about this science.” Lord Shiva smiled and
said,-“One who understands this science becomes all knowing. Creation emerges
from sound. Human body possesses two kinds of sounds. Anahat and ahata. That is
one born of collision of particles and another without collision. God lives in
human body in the form of light. Ling sharira or the causal body is the
subtlest. Spirit created space; space created wind; wind created fire; fire
created water and water created earth. One who practices yoga alone understands
science of sound. The seven principle centres of energy in human body are
muladhar,swadhisthan, manipura,anahat,visuddha, ajna and sahastrara. Only a
true yogi attains perfection in science of sound. People with consciousness
resting in lower centres of body can not understand music. Anahat sound is
heart within the body after one purifies one’s mind and heart of all impure
thoughts and feelings.
Narad asked,-‘ Lord! How come celestial sounds
become audible in this mortal body? Please reveal to me..”
“Narad! Sound that is naad is supreme in the world. Naad
creates, sustains and destroys the world. Naad is of three types,’- ghor naad is
in the navel;mandra naad is in heart; and taar naad is in the head. Whne naad
collides with wind it becomes audible and is called shruti which begets seven
notes or swara,- shadaj, rishabh, gandhar, madhyam, pancham, dhaivat, nishad.
Peacocks utter shadaj, chatak utters rishabh, goats utter gandhar, kraunch utter
madhyam, koel utters pancham, frog utters dhaivat, elephant utters nishad swar.
The nine greatest of yogis known as naths are ever steeped in naad brahm. They
are adinath,anadinath,kurmanath, bavanath,satynath,santoshnath, matsyendranath,
gopinath. Narad further asked,-“how many raga and ragini are there, lord?” Lord
Shiv replies,-“ I issued six main raga who are accompanied by several raginis.
First raga is bhairav;second- malkaushik,third hindol,fourth Deepak,
fifth-shree raga,sixth-is malhar. Bhairav should be practiced in autumn,
malkaushik in winters, hindol in hemant, Deepak in spring, and shree in grishm,
malhar in varsha ritu. Lord Shiv imparted the entire science of sound to Narad
and gace him a veena to practice so that he could spread divine sounds in the
cosmos.
